ASTM A403 WP304 / WP304L

Austenitic stainless steel — 304 / 304L. 304 and 304L are the baseline austenitic stainless grades — chromium-nickel, no molybdenum. 304L is the low-carbon variant, and the practical reason to choose it is welding: lower carbon means less chromium carbide precipitation at grain boundaries in the heat-affected zone, and therefore better resistance to intergranular attack after fabrication.

Frequently asked

What is the difference between 304 and 304L?

Carbon content. 304L is the low-carbon variant, which reduces chromium carbide precipitation during welding and therefore resists intergranular corrosion better in the as-welded condition. For welded fabrication, 304L is the safer default.

Is 304 suitable for seawater?

No. Chlorides cause pitting and stress corrosion cracking in 304. For seawater or brackish service use 316L as a minimum, and duplex S31803 or super duplex S32750 where chloride level and stress are both high.

What is the EN equivalent of A403 WP304L?

1.4307 is the counterpart usually referenced; plain 304 corresponds to 1.4301.
